Training
From CBT to Advanced Training explained:
Part 1 – CBT - Download more information...
CBT stands for Compulsory Basic Training and was introduced in 1990. As the name suggests this is compulsory for anyone who wishes to ride a scooter or motorbike. There is one exclusion to this however; ; if you had a full car licence prior to February 2001 you can ride a moped (a bike with a maximum engine size of 50cc and a maximum speed of approximately 30mph)without needing a CBT. To apply for your CBT you need to have a provisional licence (or full car licence) and will need to take both the paper part and the photocard (if you have one) to the training centre. Most centres can provide bikes and helmets but check before you go as to what’s available.
Part 2 – Full Bike Licence - Download more information...
Once you have completed your CBT you may wish to upgrade to a full motorcycle licence. To do this you have three possible routes:
- Restricted – ‘A’ Licence; this standard motorcycle licence, taken on a 121-125cc bike will restrict you for two years to only ride bikes of up to 33bhp. Engine restrictor kits are available to reduce the power output of larger bikes so that they conform to this regulation. After 2 years you can ride any bike and can have any restriction applied to your machine removed.
- Direct Access; this option is only available if you are aged 21 or over. The test is taken on a bike with a power output of at least 46.6bhp (a 500cc motorbike). This will give you a full bike licence and entitle you to ride any motorbike.
Accelerated Access; if you have obtained a restricted A Licence and wish to ride a bigger or more powerful bike, or if you were under age and reach 21 before your 2 year period has expired you can take this test to upgrade to a full bike licence.
Advanced Training: Once you have passed your full test you might want to take things further still and go on for your Advanced test, this can sometimes reduce your insurance premiums. More details ...
